- Cullman baseball coach Brent Patterson speaks to his team.
Longtime Cullman baseball coach Brent Patterson has been selected to the Alabama Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the organization announced this week.
Patterson — along with Pat Keedy (Gardendale), Jeff Mauldin (Hewitt-Trussville) and Steve Shartzer (Huntingdon College) — is part of the Class of 2025 and will be inducted at the 30th annual ALABCA awards banquet in Birmingham on Dec. 12.
“I don’t take this lightly, because this is an honor,” said Patterson, whose tenure with the Black and Gold began in 1999. “It gives me the opportunity to shed light on all the people who have made this possible — the players, coaches, parents, school folks, teachers, community — and have done so much to make it special and give us every chance to be good and successful. We always like to say it’s a Cullman baseball family. There are so many pieces to the puzzle.”
Patterson helped the Bearcats to three state titles (2002, 2007, 2008) and three runner-up finishes (2003, 2004, 2006) as an assistant under former coach Bryan Bowen before taking the reins of the program in 2009.
In the 16 seasons that have followed, Cullman has won two more state championships (2015, 2019), earned four additional runner-up finishes (2011, 2014, 2016, 2017), reached the Final Four twice more (2018, 2023) and racked up 489 wins against just 233 losses.
The Bearcats had also reached the playoffs every year since 2000 before last season and still hold a streak of 21 consecutive first-round series victories.
“(All of that) just makes me think of Bryan (Bowen) hiring me fresh out of college and giving me the opportunity,” Patterson said. “It’s a lot to reflect on and be thankful for. It’s just an honor to have my name called, especially with those who are already in there. It doesn’t seem real.”
