(Cullman Magazine) Zipping along
Published 12:00 am Friday, December 30, 2022
You can see Smith Lake from a boat or you can see Smith Lake from the shore. Heck, if you’re up for a little more action than that, you can see it from atop a set of skis or even from a plane. But until this year, zipping along at a low altitude while dangling from a sturdy wire hasn’t exactly been an option.
That all changes with the introduction of the zip line tours offered by Adventures at Smith Lake, a fun new addition to the lake’s sporting culture that combines a touch of the extreme with the security and safety of a time-honored way to get an airborne rush. After hosting its first local guests during the summer of 2022, the zip lines are set to open for the full warm-weather season starting Saturday, March 11.
While the premise is simple — strap in and lock on to a lengthy suspended zip line for an adrenalized downhill surge — Adventures at Smith Lake offers more than one way to get a thrill. Zip Line outings can come in one of three flavors, ranging from a $49, hour-long “Level 1” canopy tour to a $99 “Level 3” tour that adds in a massive, 3,000-foot “Super Zip” on top of more than half a dozen lines that, each in its own way, serves up a speedy peek at a bevy of unique lake views that simply can’t be had any other way.
Can anyone do it? Well, safety is paramount, and Adventures at Smith Lake answer guests’ most commonly-asked questions at its online FAQ page (www.smithlakezipline.com/faq-s) about what to know before you go.
But generally speaking, the zip lines are for anyone who’s fit enough for a “moderate to heavy physical workout,” as the service puts it, and all of the guides on staff are certified in both CPR and as first responders. Kids and even entire families can take part, too, with the Level 1 course available to children ages 6 and older; while kids ages 10 and above can try their hand at the gnarlier Level 3 course.
