Early morning TV news viewers got a lesson Tuesday on the city of Gardendale.

The city was this week’s subject of “Touring Your Town,” a weekly segment on Fox 6 News hosted by Jeh Jeh Pruitt.

Pruitt joined Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips and many others at Our Place restaurant, owned by Steve and Evelyn Stathakes.

The Stathakes said they enjoyed having the news team and guests in their restaurant for the morning. According to those present, Fox 6 chose Our Place because it is locally owned and because it is a mainstay in Gardendale.

Touring Your Town was shot in four segments from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the restaurant.

The first interview featured Phillips discussing the new Gardendale High School sports facility.

The second one showed Phillips and Evelyn Stathakes talking about the Gardendale Civic Center.

Mandy Adams, a Gardendale High School teacher, talked in the third segment about “giving back.” She sponsors the school’s Christmas Visions program, which raises tens of thousands of dollars every year for children in need. Also featured in the third segment was Gardendale’s Miracle League Field.

The show’s final section was about Gardendale’s history and featured Kermit Dooley, president of the Gardendale Historical Society.

Touring Your Town airs every Tuesday morning and features towns in Fox 6’s 23-county viewing area, according to Pruitt.

“We like to focus on smaller towns to give them some recognition,” Pruitt said. He added that he enjoys doing Touring Your Town every week because he learns something new about his coverage area.

“I enjoyed getting to know what’s going on in the city of Gardendale,” he said. “Plus I got some great food — the Greek omelet.”
