Winter weather causing few road worries

North Jefferson County residents were treated to a rare sight Friday afternoon — snow on the ground.
At least an inch of snow had fallen from Fultondale to Warrior as of 1 p.m. Students at Jefferson County schools had the rare opportunity to play in the snow, as classes were canceled for all county schools and Tabernacle Christian School in Gardendale.
As of Friday afternoon, roads were still passable. However, that may change as temperatures are expected to drop below the freezing mark in the evening hours.
Gardendale Public Works Superintendent Jeff Holliyan said streets around Gardendale had been treated and crews were on standby should driving conditions worsen.
“Luckily, we’ve had no roads that were snow or ice covered, though black issue could be an issue later,” he said. “The police department will monitor the calls and we’ll be ready.”
It was a similar situation in Fultondale for street department superintendent Darrell Bates. He said roads in Fultondale were still passable this afternoon, and a sand truck was on standby if conditions worsen.
A dispatcher in Kimberly said road icing had been reported in some spots, but there were no accidents or other issues. The towns of Warrior and Morris said no road problems had been reported.
The snow-topped trees and houses may be a pretty sight, but it will be short lived. Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are expected to reach the low 50s with rain and a possibility of flurries returning to the forecast on Monday.
