The post-season has arrived for high school wrestling.
Sectional qualifying tournaments will take place this weekend, with Class 5A and Class 1A-4A meets getting underway Friday afternoon and finishing on Saturday. Class 6A sectionals will be on Saturday only.
Gardendale will take part in the 6A sectional at Hewitt-Trussville starting Saturday at 10 a.m.
The local 5A teams are split between the two sectionals, with Mortimer Jordan traveling to Tallassee, while Hayden and Corner go to Fort Payne. Both meets start at 5:30 Friday, with the second day getting underway at 9 a.m. at Tallassee and a half hour later at Fort Payne.
Fultondale’s Class 1A-4A sectional will be held at St. Clair County in Odenville. Friday action starts at 5:30, and restarts Saturday at 10 a.m.
As usual, the top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state finals, to be held once again at the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, starting with Class 6A next Thursday.
Just about all regular-season wrestling ended this past weekend. Fultondale finished with the Shelby County Duals tournament, in which the Wildcats won three out of four matches.
Fultondale beat Shelby County 54-30, edged Brookwood 42-40, and clipped Hewitt-Trussville 39-33. The Cats lost to Thompson 69-9.
Brett Pennington won three matches at 152 pounds via pins, and a fourth win by forfeit. Steve Lindsey (112 lbs.) and Steven Ingram (145) also recorded three pins each.
