• Tabernacle Christian 16, Victory Christian (Columbus, Miss.) 6 (5 innings): The Torches scored 12 runs in the first inning, and the rout was on Thursday afternoon.

Tabernacle’s first six batters all scored on four walks and two hit batsmen. Five of those batters also scored on the second time through the order in the first.

Catcher Katherine Gilbert was 2-for-3 with a triple and two stolen bases. Pitcher Katie Parr hit a two-run triple and walked twice for the Torches (4-4, 4-0 ACEA). She struck out nine Victory hitters, and allowed seven hits, three walks and three earned runs.

• No. 6 Springville 11, Hayden 0 (6 innings): Savannah Hennings, the Tigers’ ace pitcher, fanned nine Wildcats and gave up just one base hit — a bunt single by Laila Russell — in four innings’ work in Area 11 play Thursday.

Hennings struck out seven batters in her first trip through the Hayden order.

Starter Ashlan Dutton was charged with the loss in 32/3 innings’ work, conceding four runs.

ASWA POLLS

Mortimer Jordan remains firmly entrenched on top of the Alabama Sports Writers Association prep softball rankings in Class 5A this week, despite a loss in their trip to California.

Likewise, Corner stays at fifth in the Class 4A poll.

Both teams are playing in the Bob Jones Tournament this weekend in Huntsville. Jordan faces Sparkman, the number-two team in Class 6A, and Mercy Academy of Louisville, Ky. in pool play. The Missles are the third-tanked team in Kentucky’s all-classes poll.

No local baseball teams cracked the top ten in this week’s polls.

BASEBALL

• Corner 12, Minor 3:  Jordan Shipp knocked a grand slam in the top of the seventh inning to cap a big victory at Minor on Thursday afternoon.

It was the only hit in five at-bats for Shipp, who also pitched two innings in middle relief.

Jared Humphrey was 2-for-3 and stole three bases for the Yellow Jackets (9-10).

Nick Webb was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Nick Glasnovich drove in two runs on his only hit.

Starter Kyle Moody got the win, with four strikeouts in four innings. He allowed five walks, five hits and two runs, one earned.

GIRLS TENNIS

• Altamont 6, Fultondale 3:  Kelsey Rembert and Jessica Harris each won their singles matches, and the pair combined to win the No. 1 doubles Tuesday over the Knights.
