On Thursday, an off-duty Jefferson County Sheriff deputy spotted a blue Ford Ranger on U.S. Hwy 31 at Tarrant Road in Gardendale. He recognized the occupants as suspects in a burglary that occurred Tuesday in the Pinson area.

The suspects had a large air conditioner in the back of their truck. When the driver saw the deputy he sped away toward north Birmingham.

The deputy followed at a safe distance as the suspects continued

through Birmingham onto Ave T in Ensley. The deputy requested back up.

The air conditioner fell out of the truck on Ave W during the suspects’ attempt to elude the deputy.

He was able to apprehend two of the three suspects at 18th Street in Ensley with help from other patrol deputies and Birmingham Police Department patrol officers.

The suspects, Justin Hall, 22 and Randall Goodman, 34, both of

Pinson, were taken into custody. The third suspect fled the area and has not been located.

The air conditioner is believed to be stolen for the copper it contained. The suspects are believed to be involved in similar thefts in other jurisdictions.

Hall is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on the charges of burglary, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, with bonds totaling $34,000.

Goodman, the driver of the vehicle, is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on charges of burglary, criminal mischief, no insurance, failure to yield, three counts of running a red light, improper lane change, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and possession of a controlled substance, with bonds totaling $54,500.

The investigation is ongoing and more charges are expected, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
