The Cullman County Probate Judge’s Office tallied up provisional ballots cast in the March 3 primary on Tuesday. With only eight provisional ballots to be counted, there were no changes to the overall results.

Voters cast provisional ballots when they show up to vote at a precinct and their is a question about their eligibility. They are allowed to vote, but their votes are not counted until the question of eligibility has been determined. Probate Judge Tammy Brown said that eight provisional ballots is a “low number” compared to previous years.

Also unlike previous years, the office was able to use technology to count the provisional ballots instead of hand counting them. “This is just like we do at the end of voting day,” said said.

The machine was not able to read one of the eight ballots because the voter had checked their selections instead of filling in the bubble. “You have to fill in the bubble for the machine to read it,” she said. The votes from that ballot were counted manually and added to the totals.

The runoff election for the Republican U.S. Senate seat and Cullman County Commission Chairman will take place March 31. Incumbent commission chairman Kenneth Walker will face challenger Jeff Clemons. Former U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions will face ex-college football coach Tommy Tuberville for the U.S Senate seat currently held by Democrat Doug Jones.

Only voters who voted in the Republican primary or did not vote at all on March 3 are eligible to vote in the runoff.
