Zach Campbell accounted for five touchdowns to lead the Hanceville Bulldogs to a 50-22 win over the Curry Yellow Jackets on Friday night.

Campbell, a freshman quarterback for Hanceville, rushed for two touchdowns and passed for three more as the Bulldogs evened their season record at 3-3. Curry remained winless at 0-5.

“He’s shown flashes this year of being an outstanding player,” Hanceville coach Cody McCain said of Campbell. “The future is really, really bright for him.”

After the Yellow Jackets took an 8-0 lead, Hanceville scored 50 straight points to leave no doubt in this non-region contest.

“We turned the ball over on the first possession and gave up a short field,” McCain said. “From that point on, we were able to take the ball down the field and score. The defense played lights out after that. We caused a few turnovers — had an interception, a couple of fumble recoveries along the way — and forced some punts. Just a great job on that side of the ball.”

Campbell got the Bulldogs on the board with a 57-yard run and his 17-yard jaunt — with Bo Joles’ 2-point conversion run – made it 16-8 at the 5:11 mark of the first quarter.

Campbell then found Brodie Malcom for 57- and 7-yard touchdown strikes to put the Bulldogs fully in control in the second quarter. Hanceville added one more score before halftime with Campbell’s touchdown pass to Trevor Shadden to put the Bulldogs ahead 38-8 heading into the locker room.

Logan Guthery fired the opening salvo of the second half with a 5-yard touchdown run, and Joles found Malcom for a 29-yard scoring strike late in the third quarter to cap the Bulldogs’ scoring.

Curry added a pair of window-dressing touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make what would be the final score.

The road gets much tougher next week as Hanceville hosts Region 5 foe Midfield, who is ranked sixth in Class 3A.

“We talked about the big thing for us is to start the second half of the season strong,” McCain said. “We have to create some positive momentum going into the second-half stretch and put all our eggs in the basket to play Midfield next week. They’re going to be tough and are extremely athletic. They’ve had everybody’s number in the region the past couple of years, but we feel like we match up a little bit better with them than we did a year ago. Hopefully we can have a good week this week and put a good game plan together.”

Hueytown 33, Cullman 16

Roydell Williams and Antonio Mason led the Class 6A, No. 4 Hueytown Golden Gophers to a 33-16 win over the Cullman Bearcats on Friday night.

Williams, the Alabama running back commit, scored three touchdowns, and Mason found the end zone twice to spoil Cullman’s homecoming night.

The Bearcats fell to 3-3 on the season, while Hueytown improved to 5-0.

Cullman kept it close early on and even took a 9-7 lead at the start of the second quarter on Jaylen Hughey’s 89-yard touchdown run.

Looking to capitalize on the momentum, Cullman attempted and recovered an onside kick after Hughey’s score. But the Bearcats eventually failed on fourth down, and Williams made them pay with a 52-yard touchdown scamper to give the Golden Gophers the lead for good.

The 14-9 score held at halftime, but Mason scored two third-quarter touchdowns. His first came on a 17-yard run on the Golden Gophers’ first possession of the second half, and he scored again at the 1:46 mark on a 10-yard run.

Cullman struck back quickly on its ensuing possession, as Navy commit Jayden Sullins raced for a 62-yard touchdown. But that was it for the Bearcats, and Williams added a 3-yard touchdown midway through the final stanza to make what would be the final score.

Cullman looks to get back in the win column next week with a region game against Athens.

Appalachian 37, Cold Springs 28

Cold Springs’ come-from-behind bid fell short Friday night as the Eagles lost to Appalachian 37-28.

Appalachian (5-1) jumped out to a 23-0 lead before Cold Springs came roaring back to within a field goal late in the third quarter. Ultimately, though, the Eagles couldn’t get it done and fell to 3-3 on the season.

After Appalachian took a 23-point lead at the 9:38 mark of the third quarter, Cold Springs got a pair of touchdowns by Ayden Alexander and another scoring run from Roberto Ayala to pull within three.

Appalachian scored a touchdown with just a second on the clock in the third quarter, but Jordan Lacey scored on a 28-yard run with 6:30 to go in the game to pull the Eagles to within 30-28.

Alton Jiles, though, put the nail in the coffin with 1:44 remaining on a 55-yard touchdown run.

Cold Springs looks to regroup next week with a bye before getting back to region play.

Danville 45, Holly Pond 36

The Danville Hawks scored four straight touchdowns spanning the second and third quarters and knocked off the visiting Holly Pond Broncos 45-36.

Holly Pond (1-5) led the contest early in the second quarter, but Danville took control of the game in the middle quarters to get to .500 on the season at 3-3.

Holly Pond quarterback Kyler Chaney did all he could do, running for two scores and passing for two more. After Levi Boatright scored to put the Broncos ahead 6-0, Danville scored two quick touchdowns to take the lead. But Chaney found Boatright for a score through the air to put the Broncos up 14-13 early in the second quarter.

But it was all Hawks from there, as by the 10:06 mark of the third quarter, they had taken a 39-14 lead.

Holly Pond tried to claw its way back in the game, as Chaney threw a scoring strike to Jayden Perkins in the third quarter and called his own number midway through the fourth for a touchdown to pull the Broncos to within 39-30.

Danville added a touchdown at the 4:29 mark of the fourth before Chaney’s quarterback keeper made what would be the final score.

Holly Pond is on the road next week for a Class 3A, Region 5 tussle with Locust Fork.
