- The Cullman Catfish host a meet June 18, 2001 at Nesmith Pool. Plans are underway to convert the shuttered pool area into a splash pad.
The City of Cullman passed two resolutions Monday night to accept grant money to improve Katherine Street and Nesmith Park.
The first grant is a $450,000 Community Development Block Grant for the installation of new water and sewer lines and paving on Katherine Street from Main Avenue to Rosemont Avenue.
Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs said the city purchased new equipment for the water and sewer department last year, which enabled them to do almost all of the work themselves on a similar project on Cleveland Avenue, and they should be able to do most of the work on this project to keep costs down by not bringing in another company.
Under the terms of the grant, the city will be responsible for providing $337,845.01 in matching funds, $250,000.00 of which will be provided in the form of in-kind services provided by the city.
“I applaud the guys for working on that last summer and I’m anticipating the success of this project,” he said.
The other grant is a $350,000 Land and Water Conservation Fund grant for an overhaul at Nesmith Park including constructing a splash pad, playground, basketball and pickleball courts, multi-use fields, walking trail and restrooms.
Nesmith Park had a pool in the past, but it had to be removed after repair costs began running too high, but this grant will enable the installation of another water feature in the park, Jacobs said.
“It’ll be a very nice project,” he said.
