What should have been a simple traffic stop ended with two arrested on multiple charges Tuesday evening.

According to Cullman Police Sgt. Joey Duncan, officer Cole Kelley was attempting to make a traffic stop on AL 157 near Temple Baptist Church when the suspect accelerated, leading Kelley on a high-speed chase though the western part of the county.

Kelley pursued Christopher Wayne Williams, 42, of Cullman, for several miles along US 278 west. When Williams slowed to turn onto County Road 114 near the Jones Chapel community, Kelley performed a pit maneuver (pursuit intervention technique) which brought the chase to an end. 

Kelley’s cruiser had to be towed from the scene and a Cullman County Sheriff’s vehicle suffered minor damage. No injuries were reported.

Williams was arrested and charged with attempting to allude and reckless endangerment. Williams also had multiple previous traffic citations and warrants for a parole violation.

In April 2017 he was arrested in Mississippi and charged with escape after walking away while on work release from the Cullman County Detention Center just days before his scheduled release.

A female passenger was also arrested on outstanding warrants from Morgan County.

“We appreciate the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in bringing this to a safe conclusion,” said Duncan.

Williams is being held at the Cullman County Detention Center.
