Wallace State Community College participated in the Alabama Community College System’s inaugural Clean Home Alabama initiative this week by updating the landscaping and aesthetics at Hanceville Civic Center.

Each community college in the state was encouraged to adopt a beautification project in their communities.

More than 50 Wallace State volunteers engaged in the event, including students from the Agricultural Production/Horticulture program, students from multiple campus organizations, and faculty and staff. Wallace State President Dr. Vicki Karolewics, Dean of Students Dr. Ryan Smith and Hanceville Mayor Kenneth Nail were each in attendance during the cleanup.

“We had great support from the top of our administration all the way down to the Hanceville community. We had student organizations to participate and Mr. Anthony Hilliard’s horticulture class did a fantastic job with adding new mulch and shrubs and edging,” said Wallace State’s Jon Stephenson, Coordinator of Student Engagement. “We wanted to leave a lasting impression, so it was important to adopt a location like the Hanceville Civic Center. We wanted to do more than pick up trash, where someone could come right back and throw litter down.”

Wallace State’s horticulture students added new boxwoods, camellias and Indian Hawthorn plants to the exterior of the Hanceville Civic Center.

The Clean Home Alabama initiative was planned this week to coincide with the Alabama 200 bicentennial events across the state.
