Did you know Gardendale has a historical society and a museum? Did you know that Gardendale was originally known as Jugtown? Would you like to know more about our history and get involved in preserving it?

The Gardendale Historical Society (GHS) was started in 2006 by a group of residents interested in preserving the history of Gardendale. If you have never been, or have not visited lately you should stop by to see all the exciting changes happening inside!! The building is currently being renovated to add more display area for Gardendale’s colorful past. The museum is also accepting donations of pictures, memorabilia,and other artifacts to preserve Gardendale’s history and use it as a teaching tool for the students in our area.

The museum is open Thursday and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Volunteers are also available to schedule school or group tours of the museum upon request.

The GHS meets the third Saturday of the month at 10 a.m. at the Gardendale Martha Moore Library. The varied programs include guest speakers, historical presentation, genealogy of Gardendale’s past residents and much more.

The next GHS meeting is January 19 at 10 a.m. at the library. Membership in the GHS gives you access to the monthly meetings, free admission to the museum and helps assure that the museum will continue to grow and be available for future generations to have a great location to actually see history up close and in the community where they live.

The GHS membership fees are family $20, Individuals $15, students $8. They also have special membership for Organizations $75 and lifetime membership $500. Tax deductible donations are also appreciated.

The society is looking for volunteers to help in a variety of ways. If you are interested in preserving history, or would just like a way to give back to Gardendale, this is the organization for you.

Caleb Morin is the youngest member of the Gardendale Historical Society at 12 years old. He is a student at Bragg Middle School and has been a member for over a year.

When asked why he got involved with the Gardendale Historical Society he said “History is important to our community. We should all want to preserve the past so that everyone can have an opportunity to learn. I have learned a lot going to the meetings and hearing all the speakers and presentations. I also enjoy volunteering and helping out where I can.” He also hopes that more students follow his lead and get Involved in preserving Gardendale’s history and volunteering their time in the community.
