STATE BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT: No. 5 Cold Springs set for 2A title showdown against No. 6 Fyffe

- Cold Springs’ Elizabeth Hill (3) checks the clock during Monday’s state semifinal vs. G.W. Long.
Cold Springs will play in its biggest game of the season — and this decade — on Friday.
The fifth-ranked Lady Eagles (27-6) are set to duke it out with No. 6 Fyffe (30-5) inside Birmingham’s Legacy Arena at 9 a.m. to see which squad will take home the Class 2A state basketball championship.
Cold Springs is looking for its first 2A title since 2009 and fourth in program history.
The Lady Red Devils, meanwhile, are seeking their first state crown since 2000 and seventh overall.
Tammy West, no stranger to state tournaments, is well aware of her team’s opportunity.
The longtime coach is also cognizant of the possible snares that could await if too caught up in the moment.
Finding the right balance is key; though, she’s confident this year’s team can accomplish the task.
“I’ve always said this group is very focused,” West said. “They don’t goof off. I know they know what’s at stake, and I definitely do, but I want them to enjoy this. Because it’s one of the best times of their lives. They might not realize it now, but they will.”
Neely Ellison doesn’t expect the lights to get too bright — not at this point in the season.
“We know it’s a big game, and I feel like we’re going to treat it as a big game,” she said. “But we’re going to play like it’s any other game — hustling, boxing out, diving for loose balls like we always do.”
Cold Springs practiced at Wallace State on Wednesday and will practice at Homewood on Thursday.
The team will also stay two nights in Birmingham.
Fyffe enters Friday’s clash riding an 11-game winning streak.
The Lady Red Devils won the Northeast Regional Tournament in Jacksonville State by beating No. 2 Sacred Heart (75-69 OT) and top-ranked Sand Rock (65-61).
Alexia Barber recorded 33 points and 24 rebounds en route to earning regional MVP honors before securing a double-double (13 points and 13 rebounds) in Monday’s 41-39 semifinal win against R.C. Hatch.
Anabelle Taylor, Madison Myers, Marie Woodall, Maggie Woodall and Gracie Hicks offer coach Steve King a number of scoring options on the offensive end of the floor as well.
Fyffe also forces a ton of turnovers — 55 in its past three games — with its speed.
All in all, quite the challenge for West and Co.
“They have a variety of scorers,” the coach said. “Their speed is a very good team strength. They play full-court pressure defense, and that’s something we’re going to have to contend with on Friday. We have been keeping our turnovers down. We’ve talked about that, worked on that. We need to be patient, smart, make good decisions. They have a couple of girls who are strong inside and some good shooters.”
But while the Lady Red Devils will be tough, Ellison has extreme confidence in her teammates.
Elizabeth Hill has been downright dominant for Cold Springs during its current seven-game winning streak.
Camryn Crider, Toni West, Kinley Campbell and Ellison can shoot with the best of them — after all, the Lady Eagles have drained 332 3-pointers so far this season.
Aubrey Negron, Lina Lieckfeld and Kylon Hamby provided grit inside as well.
“Fyffe is a really good team,” Ellison said. “But we’ve been working very hard. We’ve spent countless hours in the gym, and I’m hoping it pays off.”
West has won three state championships during her 27-year tenure with Cold Springs.
And she’d love nothing more than to add another Blue Map to the school’s trophy case.
“I think these girls deserve it,” West said. “They’re a good group that has worked extremely hard.”
For Ellison, only 32 minutes of the season remain.
But for the team’s four seniors — Crider, Campbell, Negron and Lieckfeld — the end of an era is near.
The former can think of only one way to send them out.
As state champions.
“It’s going to be hard letting go of our seniors, because they mean so much to us and to the community,” she said. “It’s going to be bittersweet no matter what but hopefully we can get the win.”
