Diamond Roundup: Hayden takes 2 from Mortimer Jordan; Corner softball 2-0 in area play

The Mortimer Jordan baseball team (8-6, 2-2) split a Class 5A, Area 11 doubleheader with Hayden at home on Tuesday.
Lefty Hunter Higdon earned a 7-3 win for Hayden in five innings of work. He allowed three runs on two hits to go with a pair of strikeouts. Right-hander Ben Abernathy checked in for the final two innings, allowing no runs on no hits to score the road save.
Hayden outfielder Preston Key went 3 for 4 at the plate, including an RBI double in the sixth inning. Nick Purvis doubled in a run in the third and Cameron Partington singled in anther during a three-run fifth.
In Part 2 of the double dip, Mortimer Jordan poured runs across with ease. The Blue Devils scored 11 runs through the first three frames to rebound with a series-tying 12-4 win. Dalton Myers, Tripp Horton and Ian Ellerbrock each recorded two hits apiece for the home team. Myers and Horton both swung in two runs for Mortimer Jordan.
Senior Preston Jones tossed a complete game with six strikeouts and two earned runs.
Hayden hosted Mortimer Jordan on Wednesday, earning a tiebreaker advantage over the Blue Devils with an 11-0 win.
The Gardendale softball team (15-2-1) Started the week with a 6-4 road win over Hueytown Tuesday and later overcame a fire-run deficit at Vestavia Hills Wednesday.
On Tuesday, No. 4 Gardendale pushed two runs in in the sixth and another in the seventh to slip by the Gophers. Junior Kailey Vaughn led all players with three hits and an RBI to go with two hits apiece from Kylee Franklin and Sarah Beth Brake.
Haley Horton (four innings) and Preslie Ross (three innings) teamed up in the circle for the Rockets.
On Wednesday, Gardendale stormed back from a 6-1 fourth-inning deficit to notch an 8-6 road win at Class 7A Vestavia Hills.
Vaughn slapped in three more runs on two more hits for the Rockets. Brake scored twice on two hits and an RBI. Jaycee Dill (three), Savannah Pennington (two) and Carlee McCondichie (two) also finished with multi-hit games.
The Corner softball team (4-2) improved to 2-0 in Class 5A, Area 11 play with a 4-1 win at Mortimer Jordan (10-4, 1-1) Tuesday night. The fourth-ranked Yellow Jackets took control with a two spot in the top of the first and stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fifth.
Ivey Hill drove in two runs and Jaden Goodwin found three hits for Corner. Hill also threw a complete game with seven strikeouts and four hits allowed. Madison Maze got the start for No. 5 Mortimer Jordan and went the distance with nine strikeouts and as many hits.
The Yellow Jackets opened up the Smith Lake Classic on Friday with a 5-4 win over Gordo. Junior Lauren Higginbotham led the offense with two RBIs and Hill tossed six strikeouts in four innings.
The Gardendale baseball team (7-3) fell at Hueytown by a score of 6-1 on Tuesday and rebounded with a 14-7 road win at Pinson Valley (5-8) Wednesday.
The Rockets scored at least one run in each inning except the fourth, including three in the first, five in the fifth and two apiece in the sixth and seventh. Junior Carson Cook swung in four runs on Wednesday to go with two RBIs from Keegan Hudson and Colt Belcher.
The Corner baseball team (8-4, 3-1) swept a Class 5A, Area 11 series with Dora this week.
The sixth-ranked Yellow Jackets went to Dora for a 10-5 win Tuesday and hosted on Thursday for an 11-1 victory followed by a 10-7 decision.
Corner was lifted by three multi-run innings in the series opener Tuesday. The visitors put up four runs in the top of the first, three more in the fourth and another triple in the sixth inning. Cole Fuller was responsible for four RBIs and had plenty of help from Gage Lisby and Trace McCormack who had three and two runs driven in respectively.
Corner saved some offensive oomph for Thursday’s home doubleheader. Head coach Josh Hoyle’s bats posted five runs on Dora in the second and six more in the fifth to claim an 11-1 mercy-rule win in five frames. Fuller (three), Isaiah McCracken (two) and Garrett Purvis (two) had seven of nine total Yellow Jacket hits.
Tanner Hayes tossed a complete five innings with five strikeouts and one hit allowed.
Hoyle called on several arms in a 10-7 Game 3 win.
Runs were not uncommon for either side, but Corner’s Justin Cummings gave his guys the advantage with four runs driven in.
The Pinson Valley softball team (9-14) has won two of its first three games at the Oneonta Invitational. The Indians started on Friday with a 5-4 loss against Brewer, but responded with a 5-4 win over Oneonta.
On Saturday, Graci Graves recorded two hits and an RBI in a 4-0 win over Fultondale. Hope Cole pitched all four innings for Pinson Valley, striking out seven in the shutout victory.
The Fultondale baseball team (3-6) has now won three of its last four games.
Two of those victories came on Tuesday in a home doubleheader against Center Point. The Wildcats outscored their visitors 27-13 Tuesday night.
Fultondale took an 18-2 loss at Hanceville Friday. The Wildcats welcome Oakman for a single game on Tuesday.
