- Vinemont's Deacon Samples fouls off a pitch on Monday.
VINEMONT — Vinemont slipped by J.B. Pennington 5-3 in Game 2 of Monday’s Class 3A playoff doubleheader to force a winner-take-all tiebreaker.
The Eagles (13-10) dropped the opener against the Tigers 15-3 at Mike Cupp Field but staved off elimination with a solid performance in the nightcap.
The teams will meet again Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. for a coveted spot in the second round.
Vinemont used its patience at the plate to strike first in Game 2.
Wyatt Thomason and Issac Smith each sandwiched bases-loaded walks around an RBI single from Hudson Wood in the third inning to help the Eagles snag a 3-0 lead before Thomason came around to score later in the frame on a wild pitch to make it 4-0.
J.B. Pennington, though, made one final push in the seventh inning.
The Tigers cut their deficit to two and had the bases loaded with two outs.
Deacon Samples, however, ended the threat — and the game — with a crucial strikeout.
Lucas Miller recorded two hits, while Wood (RBI), Samples and Zander Noblett netted one apiece.
Smith and Thomason each collected one RBI.
Adam Dunn (four innings, two hits and four strikeouts) and Samples (three innings, one hit and five strikeouts) kept J.B. Pennington’s offense at bay.
Vinemont also notched an early lead during the first matchup.
Colby Miller (RBI double), Austin Riddle (sacrifice fly) and Thomason (RBI single) helped the Eagles soar in front 3-0 in the second inning.
Unfortunately for the home team, the Tigers reeled off 15 straight runs to earn the victory.
Miller had two hits and one RBI.
Riddle (RBI), Thomason (RBI), Travis Hopper and Wood swatted one hit apiece.
