Tim Burleson is returning to the bench.

St. Bernard officially hired the former Cold Springs boys basketball coach to the same position last week.

Burleson has been the principal at Cold Springs High School since 2013 but recently retired from his post.

He will take over for Greg Boatright, who stepped down in March after six seasons atop the program.

Athletic director William Calvert was over the moon regarding the acquisition.

“When I heard he was possibly interested in retiring and getting back into coaching, I immediately called him,” Calvert said with a laugh. “We’re just elated that he’s decided to come to St. Bernard. I know he’ll be a great fit for us. It’ll be great for our program. Our kids will love him. He’s got a Hall of Fame résumé. We know what a quality person he is and what an outstanding coach he is. We’re looking forward to having him as part of our St. Bernard family.”

Burleson coached the Eagles from 1992-2013, winning 13 area titles and three county crowns during his tenure.

He also made two regional finals and qualified for the state tournament once. 

“I love Cold Springs — the school and the community,” Burleson said. “I have missed the coaching aspect of it, though. In an administrative role, you do lose some connections to the student-athlete. I love the game as well. I missed it.

“I’m both excited and nervous. I visited the campus and liked what I saw. I’ve heard nothing but positives about St. Bernard.”

Burleson said he’s already started preparing for his new role.

“I actually went back and watched some films and different sets and stuff,” he said. “It’s been six years, but I’ve stayed close to the game since then. I’m looking forward to it.”
