Tabernacle holds off stubborn Lighthouse, 36-30

The Tabernacle Torches came from behind in the second half in Friday night’s “dogfight” to defeat the Lighthouse Pirates, 36-30.

Lighthouse got on the board first with a safety, followed by a 76-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Later in the first quarter, Matt Wade put Tabernacle into the game with a 22-yard touchdown run.

On the 2-point conversion, Landon Ingle passed to Wade for the score.

In the second quarter, the Pirates hit a points streak by scoring on a 25-yard run, a 36-yard run and a 32-yard pass, to take a 24-8 lead.

Then Tabernacle’s Dylan Hargreaves scored on a 1-yard run. The 2-point conversion failed.

The third quarter saw the Torches score on their first play from scrimmage, as Wade scored on a 36-yard touchdown run.

Tabernacle then tried an on-side kick and recovered, followed by another 1-yard score by Hargreaves.

The conversion failed, followed by a on-side kick again that was recovered, ending the third quarter with the Torches ahead, 28-24.

The fourth quarter saw a 6-yard touchdown run by Hargreaves. Ingle then scored on the 2-point conversion.

The final numbers were put up when Lighthouse saw one more touchdown on a 47-yard run, with a failed conversion.

Wade had 18 carries, 197 yards and two touchdowns. Hargreaves had 12 carries, 107 yards and three touchdowns. Ingle had 10 carries with 57 yards.

On defense, Bradley White had seven tackles, two assists, and a tackle for loss. Wade had six tackles, one assist, three tackles for loss, a sack and an interception. Hargreaves had eight tackles, two assists, seven tackles for the loss, one sack and a pass broken up.

“We were in a dog fight,” said coach Keith Dabbs. “They were ready to play. They took it to us, but we hung on and won.”
