Holly Pond Mayor Bill Oliver looks at paperwork during Tuesday night’s council meeting.

HOLLY POND — The Holly Pond Town Council will soon be looking to put up more road signs in the town’s school zone to help make sure drivers do not ignore the speed limit by its schools.

During Tuesday night’s council meeting, Mayor Bill Oliver said flashing school zone signs will cost around $1,200 each, and the town will need three.

The council had previously discussed different methods of getting drivers to slow down near the schools, and a flashing sign was one of the ideas that was brought up as a way to make sure people are aware of the 20 mile per hour speed limit.

The council did not take any action on the signs Tuesday night, but Oliver said he would like the council to make a decision on them soon to make sure the signs are ordered and in place before school starts in the fall.

“They said they could get it to us quickly, but they’re going to quote us a 45-day turnaround in case something happens,” he said.

In other business, the council also discussed making a change in the way the town has its landscaping done.

Right now, one business does the landscaping in the park and around town, but that business has been doing the landscaping for around 10 years with no actions taken by the council to renew a contract or set an ending date for it, Oliver said.

“In my opinion, this okayed 10 or 12 years ago, and it’s something that just keeps going and going and going,” he said. “I’m not saying we need to change. I’m just saying it’s not something that needs to be perpetually given to somebody for them to do.”

He said rather than sticking with one business indefinitely, he would like the council to decide who will do the landscaping each year, similar to the way it does with pest control or other professional services and allow other landscapers to give quotes on their prices.

“If I were a competitor, I would have an issue with that,” he said. “Me not getting a chance.”
