HANCEVILLE — West Point’s varsity girls put any thoughts of a potential upset to bed early on Monday night, scoring the first 20 points of their first-round matchup against Vinemont to claim a 72-16 triumph at the Cullman County Basketball Tournament.

The second-seeded Lady Warriors (19-8) held 27-3, 50-8 and 67-12 leads at the quarter breaks en route to the dominant victory over the No. 7 Lady Eagles.

West Point will play the winner of No. 3 Cold Springs and sixth-seeded Holly Pond on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in the championship game.

“I told the girls … whenever you play here at Wallace, anything can happen,” coach Richie Penn said. “You have to come out with energy and start the game with tempo and momentum. We did that tonight. One thing we do need to improve on is our free-throw shooting. Other than that, this was a good win that you’re happy to get. You just want to move on at the county tournament.”

The Lady Warriors claimed top scoring contributions from Miriam Oldacre (24), Lexi Shadix (12), Brooke Brownfield (10), Olivia Ball (nine) and Micah Oldacre (seven) in the game.
