Mortimer Jordan third baseman Tripp Horton gets ready to throw the ball during a doubleheader at Clay-Chalkville on Friday.

The Corner baseball team traveled up to Russellville on Friday and before the rain washed everyone back home, the Yellow Jackets had secured two more wins.

Things didn’t look good for Corner (3-0) in the opener against Madison Academy, but an eight-run rally in the final inning was good enough for a Yellow Jackets’ win, 10-9. Junior Logan Burkett, who checked in as a pinch hitter and responded with two seventh-inning hits, delivered the knockout punch. He walked it off with a two-out RBI double to the center field wall.

Gage Lisby, Colby Drummond and Garrett Purvis also provided some timely hitting for Corner in the bottom-half of the seventh inning, which started with Corner trailing 9-2.

“I just told them to keep seeing pitches, keep getting guys up, just refuse to be the guy that ends it and you could just feel the tone of the game starting to change. With every mound visit, with every pitching change that they had, our fans kinda said ‘hey, we’ve got something going here,’” said Yellow Jackets’ head coach Josh Hoyle.

The game stayed close through the first five innings, but Madison Academy sent seven runs across in the sixth inning to claim an 8-1 advantage. Corner answered with a single run in the bottom-half of the frame, but the Mustangs got it back with an insurance run in the top of the seventh.

That sequence set the stage for what would become a massive comeback win for the Jackets.

Later on, Corner played some defense in a 7-0 win over Russellville. The nightcap was called after five innings, due to heavy rain.

“Brayden Rowe got the start on the mound and was just phenomenal,” said Hoyle.

The sophomore recorded six strikeouts and allowed no runs off two hits in the win. He also delivered on the offensive end with a two-run double. Gage Lisby helped out with two hits and two RBIs of his own.

The Mortimer Jordan baseball team also nabbed two wins on Friday night in a double dip at Class 6A Clay-Chalkville.

The Blue Devils (3-1) took the first game by a count of 3-2 and came right back for a 12-4 thumping of the Cougars.

Senior Chase Austin earned the early win, tossing five strikeouts in five innings of work. Sophomore Griffin Busby earned the save, as he stepped in to record the final out in a one-run ballgame.

Left fielder Joseph Swann drove home two runs in the third inning. Designated hitter Chase Batchelor finished 2-for-3 at the plate with one run scored for the Blue Devils.

In Game 2, Mortimer Jordan piled the runs up early.

The visitors scored one run in the first, two in the second and five more in the third to claim a 8-1 lead going to the fourth inning.

Junior Garek Hall went 2-for-3 with four RBIs in the nightcap. Zach Prisoc, Tripp Horton and Will Allman also recorded hits for the Blue Devils.

Left-hander Ian Ellerbrock earned the win in 4 1/3 innings of work. He allowed three runs on three hits while striking out four Clay-Chalkville batters. Griffin Busby (1 2/3) and Joseph Swann (1) also logged innings for head coach Shayne Carnes.

The Gardendale baseball team went for its first win of the season on Thursday night at home.

The Rockets (2-1) strung 10 hits together en route to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over Ramsay. Peyton Godfrey (three RBIs), Austin Burdette (a double and an RBI), Michael Crowder (Two RBIs) and Colt Belcher (2-for-2) each came away with two hits apiece for the home team.

Gardendale got back on the field for a 9-1 win over Oak Grove Saturday. The two were originally scheduled for a doubleheader, but rain prevented the second game of the day.

Godfrey toed the rubber for the Rockets, tossing six shutout innings and allowing only two hits to the Tigers. Offensively, he came through with a 3-for-4 effort with a home run and three RBIs. As a team, Gardendale strung 12 hits together on Saturday.

David Harris and Gavin Walker each went 2-for-4 at the dish with a pair of singles and an RBI.

The Gardendale softball team closed out the weekend with a 3-2 win over West Minster in the John Carroll Tournament finals. The Rockets (12-0) stormed through the tournament field with wins over Pell City, John Carroll, Coosa Christian, Shades Valley and West Minster.

During pool play on Friday, Chaney Phillips, Kylee Franklin, Jaycee Dill and Karlee Mayfield each connected with home runs for Gardendale.

The Rockets open Class 6A, Area 12 play Thursday, when Clay-Chalkville comes to town for a 5 p.m. contest.

The Mortimer Jordan softball team finished the Leeds Tournament at 3-2 over the weekend, updating its overall record to 6-4 on the year.

The Blue Devils captured two wins in pool play Friday, beating Clay-Chalkville 6-1 and Chelsea 3-1. They returned to the field Saturday morning for a 4-1 win over Pinson Valley, but dropped their first two games of bracket play.

Mortimer Jordan is scheduled to visit Pinson Valley on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
