Scheduled Nov. 3 at Cullman Regional Airport, visitors to the one-day event will be able to get a hands-on experience of the equipment used by veterans dating back to World War II. A limited number of rides on Huey and Cobra helicopters from the Vietnam War era will also be available. Tickets must be purchased by visiting cullmanveteransday.com.

An added event at this year’s celebration will be the Silver Wings parachute team from Fort Benning, Georgia. The highly skilled parachutists train and perform daily and are a significant force in Army recruiting.

Greg Leipert, of Cullman, recently retired from the Army has met with members of the team and watched their show.

“They parachute at all types of public events, including football games,” Leipert said. “I think everyone will enjoy watching the skill of the team and getting a chance to talk to them.”

Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs encouraged area residents to come to the celebration and invite others to join in the festivities.

“In the past, the military helicopter rides have been a big demand and they’re back this year,” Jacobs said. “We appreciate the work of the Elks Lodge, the veterans and all of the volunteers who make this event possible.”

Retired Lt. Col. Ralph Bryson and Maj. Robert Stephens, both of Cullman, flew on the Huey and Cobra helicopters during the Vietnam War. They will be on hand, as well as many other veterans, to talk about their experiences with visitors to the event.

Role players, depicting World War II years, will also be on hand for historical portrayals.

Publicity Chairman Patrick James said admission and parking are free. The event draws thousands of residents and visitors to the area each year.
