Publix employee Jackie Allen dusts at the Good Samaritan Health Clinic as part of the annual Day of Caring across Cullman County.

The United Way of Cullman County’s partner agencies got a helping hand Tuesday as volunteers from 12 local businesses donated their time to clean, paint or do other projects that were needed.

Employees from Cullman’s Publix location spent the day at the Good Samaritan Health Clinic, and gave it a deep cleaning on the inside and pressure washed the exterior.

Store manager Brad Boshell, who is also on the United Way of Cullman County’s Board of Directors, said Cullman Publix employees have volunteered for the community at the annual Publix Serves Day, but this is the first time that they have taken part in the Day of Caring.

“This is our first year, but not our last,” he said.

Boshell said he has a good working relationship with Good Samaritan Executive Director Jolanda Hutson, and there are employees who have benefited from the clinic, and that is what led Publix to spend the day working at the clinic.

“A lot of my associates have used the clinic in the past, and it just felt good to us,” he said.

Boshell also credited the store’s employees for volunteering for the Day of Caring and spending a day to help the people of the community.

“They’re out here on their day off, working hard and giving back to the community,” he said.

The employees and patients of the Good Samaritan Clinic also appreciate the effort that the Publix employees put in to clean the clinic, said Hutson.

“We are very grateful for them wanting to give back to the community,” she said. “I know our patients will appreciate it as much as we do.”

Hutson also made sure to thank the United Way and everyone else who helps the clinic and other agencies in their work to help the people of Cullman.

“We appreciate the fact that we are a United Way partner agency,” she said. “It’s all about coming together, united, for the common goal of giving back to our community and making it the special place that it is. Because Cullman is a special place.”
