KIMBERLY—Fireworks were not the only thing on fire Friday night, as the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils (5-1, 3-0) cruised past rival Hayden (1-5, 0-3) on homecoming night 41-0. This win marks the seventh straight season the Blue Devils top the Wildcats.
Mortimer Jordan controlled the game the entire night, especially on defense. The Blue Devils only allowed 56 yards of total offense, while also forcing two lost fumbles.
“We knew they were going to run the Wing-T, and we had to stop the run. I think we did a good job with that,” Jordan head coach Dusty Goode said after the game.
On the opening drive, Hayden lined up to punt, and a bad snap resulted in a safety, giving Mortimer Jordan a 2-0 lead 1:09 into the game.
Throughout the first quarter, Jordan would spark two touchdown drives to add onto its lead. On the first scoring drive, Blue Devils junior quarterback Kourtlan Marsh found senior running back Garek Hall wide open for a 36-yard touchdown connection. The next drive saw Marsh sneak the ball one yard into the end zone to give Jordan a 15-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Midway through the second quarter, Jordan senior Daniel Franklin powered his way through Hayden’s defense five yards for a touchdown, putting the Blue Devils up 22-0 at the half.
Mortimer Jordan crafted a 64-yard scoring drive in the third quarter. Marsh punctuated the series with a 21-yard touchdown dash, while making defenders miss him in the process, giving his team a 28-0 advantage.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Franklin bulldozed his way to the house from 11 yards out, increasing the Blue Devil lead to 34-0.
After the Blue Devil defense forced a Wildcat fumble, Mortimer Jordan created a two-play, 28-yard scoring drive. Hall took the ball from the 27-yard line, and accelerated for a score, giving Jordan its last touchdown of the game.
With that, Mortimer Jordan ran the clock out and finished the game with a dominant 41-0 win over Hayden.
All night, the Blue Devils ran a triple-option that could not be stopped, which included Marsh, Hall, and junior fullback Keondrick Hankins. The trio combined for 160 rushing yards, with Hall earning 71 yards, Hankins earning 53 yards, and Marsh earning 36.
Through the air, Marsh completed 12 of 21 passes for 196 yards with a touchdown. His two favorite targets were Hall and junior Garrison McCleney. Hall caught seven passes for 92 yards with a touchdown, and McCleney had two catches for 62 yards.
In total, Mortimer Jordan racked up 405 total yards of offense.
Mortimer Jordan would like to continue its five-game winning streak next week when they host Central of Clay County (3-2, 3-0) in a region battle. Hayden will seek its first region win next week as they travel to Hamilton (2-3, 1-2).
