The Tabernacle Christian football team looks to the sideline during a home win over Hope Christian.

Tabernacle Christian nearly pulled the upset of the eight-man season last Friday night in Meridian, Miss.

Sophomore quarterback Drew Peters missed Isaac Anderson on fourth down, crashing the upset bid at the Russell Christian 5-yard line late in the fourth quarter. With a 37-34 win, the Warriors (7-0, 4-0 Christian Football Association) maintain their post atop the league standings.

“It almost bounced our way,” said Tabernacle head coach Keith Dabbs. “We recovered two onside kicks and Josiah Davis had an interception, but we did not get it done. We played a really good game but missed too many tackles.”

The Torches’ final drive went for 20 snaps and ate up six minutes of game time before the fourth-down pass fell incomplete. That wouldn’t be Tabernacle’s only lengthy drive of the game, as it pieced together a 17-play possession in the second quarter.

As a team, the Torches (3-3, 1-2 CFA) ran for 300 yards on the top defense in the CFA. Tony Galbraith led the way with 127 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries. Anderson went for 88 yards and two scores on 15 carries and Josiah Davis finished with 73 yards and a touchdown on 17 calls.
