PREP VOLLEYBALL: Addison, Fairview advance to state tournament

Addison and Fairview advanced to next week’s state volleyball tournament in Birmingham following stellar efforts at the North Super Regional Tournament in Huntsville.

The Class 2A, No. 1 Lady Bulldogs breezed past Fyffe (25-6, 25-18, 25-12) and No. 10 Horseshoe Bend (25-6, 25-6, 25-12) on Thursday to punch their state ticket for a 17th straight year before besting Cedar Bluff (25-22, 25-16, 25-23) and No. 2 Winston County (25-15, 21-25, 25-10, 25-22) on Friday to collect their sixth North Super Regional Tournament title in the past seven seasons.

Stats for Addison, which is now 51-12, were unavailable.

The Lady Bulldogs are looking for their sixth consecutive state championship and 11th overall. They’ll open play in Birmingham next Wednesday against Fayetteville as the No. 1 seed in the North.

The 4A No. 4 Lady Aggies, meanwhile, garnered their state spot with victories against Cleburne County (25-17, 26-24, 25-12) and No. 8 West Morgan (24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21) in the North Super Regional Tournament on Friday.

It’s the first state tournament berth for the Lady Aggies since 1998.

Alivia Boyll (27 assists, six kills and two digs), Micah Means (38 assists, six aces, five kills and two digs), Isabella McGukin (10 digs, eight kills and one block), Katie Ball (20 kills, 14 digs and four aces), Daisy Manasco (28 kills, 15 digs and five aces) and Tess Bailey (14 kills, 11 digs, five blocks and two aces) all contributed for the Purple and Gold on Friday.

Fairview (49-17) will continue play on Saturday with a 10 a.m. contest against No. 9 Central-Florence.


Class 2A

Cold Springs came up short against Sumiton Christian (25-18, 21-25, 26-24, 28-26) in its opening-round contest at the North Super Regional Tournament on Thursday.

The ninth-ranked Lady Eagles finished their season with a 33-10 record.

Class 3A

Holly Pond beat Pisgah (25-23, 25-23, 14-25, 22-25, 16-14) in the opening round before falling to Glencoe (20-25, 25-18, 25-10, 25-17) at the North Super Regional Tournament on Thursday.

Vinemont’s season ended as well following an opening-round loss (25-11, 25-9, 25-5) to No. 5 Geraldine.

West Point dropped its opening-round matchup against No. 8 East Limestone (25-21, 19-25, 27-25, 25-21) at the North Super Regional Tournament on Thursday.

The 10th-ranked Lady Warriors ended their season with a 45-9 record.
