America at times seems far removed from the simple gathering that is largely recognized as the first Thanksgiving.
Documentation of Native Americans and settlers from England playing games, enjoying a feast of wildfowl, fish, and a collection of vegetables surely made for a day of binding fellowship. The winters were harsh in the northeast colonies, making a bountiful harvest and friends equally valuable.
Presuming this portrait of Thanksgiving recorded by early settlers is accurate, the scene and purpose of such a gathering carries two simple messages: learn to get along and be thankful for all good things.
The early years of Europeans arriving in North America brought together two cultures with widely diverse beliefs. In some cases, the meetings and relationships ranged from peaceful to violent, depending on the perception or actions of either side.
While suspicion and misunderstandings were to be expected, the feast of Thanksgiving established a commonality and stood as proof that simple needs and respect create peace and understanding.
The nation grew rapidly after the early years, going through a revolution and civil war, with many battles and wars in between. And here we are today, with much history and conflict to weigh but also plenty to be thankful for in reflection and in looking forward.
From the beginning, the settling of this land was met by conflict, prejudices, violence, broken promises, conquest and expansion. No other nation can claim to be any better in those regards, but the people of the United States — with its vastly diverse population — has stood out on a positive side in comparison to many places around the world.
As a country established on the belief that people are deserving of basic personal liberties and should control the direction of government, many conflicts have been solved by the very spirit of Thanksgiving. Helping others, sitting down together in understanding, and topping it all with giving thanks are great lessons for building a better life.
Today and through the weekend, American highways and airways will be filled with travelers heading to family gatherings and traditional feasts. This uniquely American observance brings a peaceful and joyful feeling to millions who understand that blessings are both large and small.
We have much to be thankful for in our community, state and nation. Few places offer so many opportunities, security and charity for its people.
Enjoy a great time with family and friends, give thanks for your blessings and Happy Thanksgiving.
