GOOD HOPE — Bailey Quick and the Good Hope Raiders put an exclamation point on the regular season with a 49-18 win over the Hanceville Bulldogs on Friday night.
Quick passed for two scores and ran for another as Good Hope improved to 9-1.
Hanceville finished the 2018 campaign with a 1-9 mark.
“Our guys came out tonight, knew they had a job to do, to finish the season off, and they did that,” Good Hope coach Alan Scott said. “I’m just super proud of how they played.”
The Raiders were strong on defense, too, forcing six turnovers and limiting the Hanceville rushing attack to just 63 yards. Austin Knight recorded three fumble recoveries.
The nine wins are the most for the Raiders since 2006 and more than the program racked up in the previous three seasons combined.
It was especially sweet for the seniors.
“It’s great,” Scott said. “These guys had high expectations for the season. They set goals for themselves, and they’ve done them so far. I’m thankful they were able to stick it out, keep believing, keep fighting.”
Good Hope will have to travel in the first round of the playoffs next week after losing out on a three-team tiebreaker rule with Class 4A, Region 5 foes Northside and Fayette County.
Knowing his team would be playing in the postseason next week provided what Scott called a “unique” challenge against Hanceville.
“You don’t want to be taken off guard next week, but at the same time, we know Hanceville is a rivalry game,” he said. “These guys, we knew what they were going to do — play us tough and get after us. Our coaching staff, we wanted to focus on Hanceville.
“Now we’re going to try to enjoy this for just a moment and then buckle down.”
Isaiah Green had a pair of touchdowns on his only two carries for Good Hope, including the first of the game midway through the first quarter.
Quick electrified the home crowd with a 44-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. The senior quarterback started up the middle, danced outside at the 30 where he made a defender slip, and took it to the house.
Hanceville’s Fred Ellis, though, provided a highlight of his own on the ensuing kickoff. Ellis looked to be hemmed up around the 35-yard line only to break free to the sideline and outrun the Good Hope special teams for an 88-yard return to make it 15-6.
Bailey responded with two straight touchdown tosses — both to Preston Bagwell — to extend the lead.
Hanceville managed to put together a drive in the closing moments of the first half, as Ellis hit Ethan Driver across the middle for a 24-yard touchdown pass to make it 29-12 at halftime.
Colton Bagwell found the end zone in the third quarter before Green’s second score made the score 43-12. Walter Perez kicked two field goals in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring for the Raiders.
The only touchdown for the Bulldogs in the second half came on a 54-yard pass from Bo Joles to Romael Simmons.
For the game, Quick rolled up 123 yards on the ground and completed 9 of 13 passes for 89 yards. His favorite target was Preston Bagwell, who caught five passes for 59 yards and the two touchdowns. Colton Bagwell ran for 78 yards, and Matt Schwaiger added 77 yards.
For Hanceville, RJ Evans ran for a team-high 63 yards. Simmons finished the night with four catches for 80 yards.
