The much anticipated snowfall of north Alabama has been downgraded for Cullman, but dipping temperatures could cause freezing along some roads this weekend.

Early Thursday, the National Weather Service had predicted snow flurries beginning Sunday night and Monday morning, mixed with rain for the area.

By the afternoon, the rain remained prominently in the forecast while most of the snow is expected further north in higher elevations.

“The only real problems the weather service was looking at by the afternoon was in Dekalb and Jackson counties, and possibly some other locations farther north,” said Cullman County Emergency Management Agency Director Phyllis Little.

Even with the anticipation of snow diminished, Little said motorists in the busy holiday season should be aware that low or sheltered roads and bridges could have black ice as temperatures descend into the 20s during nighttime and early morning hours.

“It’s a situation where you just have to keep up with the conditions, take time to check now and then,” Little said. “It’s not unforeseeable to have snow or ice this early in the season in north Alabama. The weather can change quickly in this region.”

The weather service places the chance of rain at 50 percent today, increasing to 70 percent overnight. Today’s high temperature will be 42, falling to 37 at night. New precipitation amounts of less than a 10th of an inch are possible.

Saturday’s high will be 44, but rain is a 90 percent chance through the night with wind gusts reaching 25 miles per hour.

Rain will continue Sunday with the high of 43.

Monday and Tuesday will have lows in the 20s.
