- Members of the First Baptist Church Ladies’ Ensemble go a-caroling for guests Thursday at the Cullman Regional Foundation’s annual Lights of Love Christmas fundraiser.
The life, career, and spirit of the late Dr. Bob Echols were honored Thursday evening at Cullman Regional’s annual Christmas fundraiser, an event that celebrated the hope the longtime physician imparted to both his patients and his community.
“He will always be remembered as a selfless physician, a gentleman of integrity, and a friend to all,” said local businessman Danny McAfee in a special tribute at this year’s Lights of Love Christmas ceremony, hosted annually by the Cullman Regional Foundation.
“Countless patients and families were blessed by his uncanny ability to diagnose and treat with an unforgettable humor, love, and compassion.”
Echols, who passed away in September, worked in the emergency room at Cullman Regional for 20 years as part of a 44-year medical career. He also served as an elder at Cullman Church of Christ. He also served on medical missions in Guatemala and Honduras, and helped start Cullman County’s Good Samaritan Clinic for indigent patients.
Held at Cullman Regional, Lights of Love also featured Christmas entertainment from local musicians both young and young at heart, including the First Baptist Church Kids’ Chorus, the church’s Ladies’ Ensemble, and instrumental music from Dr. and Mrs. David Shupe and Ken Simpson. Local pianist Debbie Chalkley provided additional music and accompaniment throughout the evening.
For 2018, Cullman Regional’s fundraising focus is on helping the hospital obtain cardiac monitors and equipment. The year’s funding efforts will reach their peak in the spring of 2019, when the Foundation hosts Gala XVIII, the nonprofit organization’s signature event.
