More local families will find relief from hunger after My Way Transportation’s $10,000 gift to the Cullman Caring for Kids food bank Monday.
Staff members of the Cullman County-based trucking company met with Cullman Caring for Kids Director Javon Daniel to present the check and issue a challenge to other local transportation companies, merchants and professional firms to match or exceed the donation.
“It’s a privilege for us to be able to do this. We’ve always thought a lot of Cullman Caring for Kids and its mission in the community,” said John Henry, safety director at My Way.
My Way made a similar challenge last year to assist families through the food bank.
Cullman Caring for Kids is recording more than 600 families per month seeking assistance with food and other supplies to support their families, Daniel said.
“Christmas is a big time for giving and we can’t even express how grateful we are for this gift from My Way,” Daniel said. “The need we are seeing is throughout the year, whether it is summer or Christmas. We’re seeing a lot of grandparents seeking assistance because they are raising their grandchildren on fixed incomes. There is a real need here in our own community because of a lot of circumstances that are arising to care for children.”
The formula for cash donations is that a dollar can purchase 7 pounds of food from the USDA food bank in Huntsville. The $10,000 donation will roughly account for 70,000 pounds of food. The food bank provides assistance for Cullman County families and is located at 402 Arnold St NE in downtown Cullman. Questions about the services offered may be directed to Daniel and his staff at 256-739-1111.
“As a local company we want to give back to our community and help others when they have needs,” Henry said. “We hope others will join in with this effort for local families.”
My Way, in business for 22 years, specializes in shipping dry goods across 48 states and also provides warehouse storage space for customers.
