Cullman Caring for Kids experiencing flooding problems

- Empty shelves at the Cullman Caring for Kids Food Bank in June 2017.
Javon Daniel walked carefully into the basement for Cullman Caring for Kids so he wouldn’t trip over fan and vacuum chords or slip in any of the water still on the floor.
“We’ve had a problem with big heavy rains and it’s like it just comes up the floor,” Daniel, the charity’s executive director said.

Fans help circulate air and dry up some of the water.
“But it’s kind of a losing battle,” he said.
At one point, 2-3 inches covered the floor. Now you can see how it’s warped shelves that would normally hold supplies for needy families.
″We’re going to lose some of this stuff to dampness and mold and we know it,” Daniel said.
The charity is using donated space. And its getting help when the basement floods. But Daniel says they need a permanent solution to keep food or other items from becoming damaged.
“We just need help getting this problem solved and helping this kind of thing from happening again so we don’t have to jeopardize being open to help the people who need help,” he said.

Cullman Caring for Kids said none of the food stored in their space has been damaged from flooding. They’re keeping it stored above the basement so it stays that way. Ideally they’d like the flooding fixed or find someone willing to donate warehouse space without a basement that they could use. They can be reached at 256-739-1111 if you’d like to help them.
