- Fairview's freshman boys.
HANCEVILLE — Perfection.
For West Point’s freshman boys, the 10-letter word will forever be etched in their respective memories following a terrific performance against Fairview at the Cullman County Basketball Tournament on Saturday.
The top-seeded Warriors led the No. 2 Aggies from start to finish during the championship game at Tom Drake Coliseum and eventually put the final touches on a 46-35 triumph to wrap up a 21-0 season and garner the program’s third county title in the past four years.
“My compliments to Fairview,” said Maroon and White coach Jimmy Harbison. “They never went away. That’s really just a testament to the program they’re building over there. My guys, though, they bought into what we wanted to do from a team standpoint from the start. They fought hard and accomplished their goal of winning a county championship.”
West Point turned a close outing in the first half into a seven-point lead entering the locker room. Five different Warriors netted at least two points during that stretch.
Harbison’s team continued to pad its cushion in the third frame with inside buckets from Tyler Thompson and perimeter baskets from Whitt Laney, both of whom were named to the All-Tournament squad.
The former sank six of his last seven free-throw attempts, while the latter scored nine of his game-high 15 points in the second half to help slowly put some distance between the Maroon and White and their opponent.
“It was just another game we had to come out and play to the best of our ability,” Laney said. “We got a cushion and it allowed us to play ahead most of the game. No better way to end a season.”
Thompson was next in line for West Point with 13 points. Tyler White (eight), Will Brown (seven) and Elvis Arroyo (three) rounded out the scoring for the county’s best ninth-grade group.
Fairview Dow Nichols’ parlayed 12-point outing into an All-Tournament Team selection, while Cody Cox (six) and Ethan Satterfield (five) also pitched in points.
Coach Cliff Bailey was direct in his reasoning behind the loss.
“We just couldn’t stop them,” he said. “It’s a good team. Congratulations to them. We put some pressure on them and kept it close, but we just couldn’t pull it out.”
As for Harbison and his program, things couldn’t have turned out much better.
The goals for this season? Win their Thanksgiving, Christmas and county tournaments.
Check. Check. And check.
“These kids did it all,” Harbison said. “21-0 is just icing on the cake.”
Good Hope’s Zach Watson rounded out the All-Tournament Team, which was handpicked by Johnny Thornton.
