Holly Pond’s boys and Cold Springs’ girls will enter this year’s Cullman County Basketball Tournament with a target on their backs.

The Broncos and the Lady Eagles officially wrapped up the top varsity seeds in a drawing ceremony on Wednesday after finishing undefeated in county games with seeding implications.

For the fourth straight season, seeding was based on first meetings — tournaments excluded — among the seven county schools. Tourney brackets were also cemented by the county’s coaches.

The annual bonanza will get underway Saturday, Jan. 21 and conclude Saturday, Jan. 28 at Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum. Admission is set at $5 per day.

Holly Pond (6-0 seed record) will enjoy a first-round bye on the boys side. Cold Springs (4-2) collected the No. 2 seed followed by Fairview (4-2), West Point (3-3), Good Hope (3-3), Hanceville (1-5) and Vinemont (0-6).

Although the Broncos have earned the top seed in three of the past four draws, they have yet to win a title from the No. 1 position.

The Green and White’s 2015 county championship — their first since 2002 — came as the No. 2 seed.

“You’ve definitely got mixed emotions about it, because we have not fared too well at No. 1,” coach Mitch Morris said with a laugh. “Having said that, it says a lot about the boys who’ve won the games to get us here. We’ll just have to see if we can step up in the tournament and win those games.

“You just don’t know. What you do in the regular season doesn’t always carry over. You’ve got to come into the county tournament playing well and ready to play.”

West Point and Good Hope will jumpstart the varsity boys action Jan. 23 at 7:30 p.m. Rounding out the first-round contests will be Fairview and defending champion Hanceville (Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m.), and Cold Springs and Vinemont (Jan. 25 at 7:30 p.m.).

Cold Springs’ girls will rest up in the first round before attempting to garner their second straight county title. Fairview (5-1) grabbed the second seed followed by West Point (4-2), Hanceville (3-3), Holly Pond (2-4), Good Hope (1-5) and Vinemont (0-6).

The Lady Eagles have nabbed six championships since 2000, while the Lady Aggies are seeking their first in more than three decades.

“There’s really a lot of good competition this year,” said longtime Blue and Gold coach Tammy West. “The seeding doesn’t always work out. We saw that last season. But it’s an honor for the girls, and I’m proud of them. We’ll be ready to be go.”

Fairview and Vinemont will kick things off Jan. 23 at 6:15 p.m. followed by West Point and Good Hope (Jan. 24 at 6:15 p.m.), and Holly Pond and Hanceville (Jan. 25 at 6:15 p.m.) to wrap up the opening round.
