Basketball: Area tournament schedules released

High school area basketball tournaments begin next week for teams across the state. Tournament champions and runner-ups will advance to the sub-regional round of the state playoffs, which begin on Feb. 13 for girls and Feb. 14 for boys.
Here is the rundown for local boys and girls tournaments.
Class 6A, Area 12 Boys Basketball Tournament
It came down to a coin toss between Pinson Valley and Clay-Chalkville. Indians head coach Cedric Lane called heads, and he was right.
Pinson Valley, winners in nine of its last 10 games, opens tournament play against No. 4 seed Gardendale on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that contest is guaranteed a playoff berth and a shot at the area championship.
Second-seeded Clay-Chalkville takes the floor on Tuesday at 7 p.m. against Center Point. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. in Mike Dutton Gymnasium.
Class 6A, Area 12 Girls Basketball Tournament
Clay-Chalkville, ranked No. 6 in the state, will play host on Wednesday (semifinal games) and Friday (championship game).
No. 4 seed Pinson Valley will face the Cougars on Wednesday at 6 p.m. followed by Gardendale-Center Point at 7:30. The winners will battle for an area championship on Friday evening at 6.
Class 5A, Area 11 Boys Basketball Tournament
Top-seeded Mortimer Jordan cruised through league play 6-0.
The Blue Devils host No. 4 seed Saint Clair County on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. following the tournament opener between Corner and Springville. Winners play on Friday night at 7 for the area championship.
Class 5A, Area 11 Girls Basketball Tournament
Mortimer Jordan High School will also host the Area 11 girls tournament.
Play begins on Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. as Mortimer Jordan welcomes No. 4 seed Corner. The winner secures a sub-regional berth and a date in the area title game on Thursday night at 7.
Saint Clair County and Springville (Tuesday at 7 p.m.) will battle on the opposite end of the bracket.
Class 3A, Area 8 Boys Basketball Tournament
In order to reach the playoffs, second-seeded Fultondale needs a win over third-seeded Holy Family next Tuesday in the area tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at Midfield High School.
Top-seeded Midfield takes the floor against Indian Springs later that night. Both winners play for the Area 8 title next Thursday night at 7:30.
Class 3A, Area 8 Girls Basketball Tournament
A coin flip decided Midfield over Holy Family.
Fultondale will visit Midfield next Tuesday in the semifinals at 3 p.m. That game will be followed by Indian Springs-Holy Family. The tournament finals will be played next Thursday at 6 p.m.
