PREP SPORTS: Cullman’s Tizapa earns Athlete of the Week honor
Published 4:10 pm Wednesday, May 3, 2017
- Cullman's Miguel Tizapa
Cullman’s boys soccer team punched a ticket to the Class 6A quarterfinals for a second straight season on Tuesday night.
Miguel Tizapa is the main reason why — at least, through two bouts of playoff soccer.
The junior standout scored two goals in a first-round victory against No. 2 Fort Payne — his golden goal in overtime allowed the visiting and sixth-ranked Bearcats to celebrate a 4-3 win — before scoring two goals in a 2-0 home triumph over Florence to improve the Black and Gold’s record to 14-6-1 on the season.
For that reason, Tizapa is The Times’ Athlete of the Week.
Teammate Jaron Potter also shined for Cullman, securing 18 saves over the two playoffs victories.
Athlete of the Week, which is sponsored by Bill Smith Buick GMC, is currently open to any spring-sport athlete. Nominations are often encouraged and can be submitted to jwinfrey@cullmantimes.com with the athlete’s name, school and statistics-accomplishments that make them a worthy candidate.
