- Cullman's new softball coach — Megan Cagle.
Cullman’s softball program has a new leader.
Meagan Cagle, who was named the Black and Gold’s volleyball coach in June, will assume a second head coaching role during the spring — and she couldn’t be happier about the situation.
“I was all for it,” she said. “I’m a big advocate of multi-sport athletes. If a coach can coach two sports, then athletes can say, ‘I think I can do this as well.’ I thought about it and prayed about it. I have no doubt it’s going to be great. It’s a lot, and it’s very demanding, but we worked all the way through it and felt comfortable about it.”
Cagle said she was approached about the opportunity several weeks ago, but the hire wasn’t made official until last week.
The 2009 Addison graduate — who played softball and volleyball — has spent the past four years at Cullman, where she’s coached middle school basketball and junior varsity volleyball.
Now, she’ll get a chance to take over two varsity squads.
Cagle will replace Stephanie Conner — who stepped down in June — in the dugout.
In five seasons atop the program, Conner led the Lady Bearcats to five regional appearances, three state berths, two regional titles and two area crowns. She claimed more than 130 wins and was named The Times’ All-Area Softball Coach of the Year twice (2015 and 2016).
Though Conner will stay on as an assistant, Cagle knows she has some big shoes to fill.
“We’re going to do a lot in the offseason,” she said. “I’m going to be very demanding. I don’t expect anything less than really what’s been accomplished under Stephanie. We’re going to work, build and demand.”
