Lunch prices on the rise for city school employees

The price for school lunches are going up for Cullman City Schools employees.

The Cullman City Board of Education approved increasing the cost to $3.25 from $3, based on USDA requirements, beginning the 2017-2018 school year. The employee breakfast price will remain the same.

In April, the school board raised the cost for student lunches: from $2.10 to $2.25 at East Elementary, West Elementary and Cullman City Primary School and $2.35 to $2.50 at Cullman Middle School and Cullman High School, based on USDA guidelines.

Cullman County Schools approved new lunch prices in May — $2.25 to $2.35 for students, $3.25 to $3.35 for employees and $3.50 to $3.60 for visitors.

In an unrelated measure, the school board approved demolishing a home at 906 Third Ave. N.E., but no date has been set. The school board acquired the property in 2012, according to county property records.

In other business Wednesday, the Cullman City Board of Education:

Approved agenda.

Approved salvaging a Dell Optiplex 740 tower and a Brother laser printer at West Elementary School.

Approved $150 stipend to Gina Nix for providing professional development at New Teacher Induction.

Approved contract with Glenda Harbison to provide teaching services at East Elementary School (2.5 days per week) for the 2017-2018 school year.

Approved contract with Jady Pipes to provide assistance for sound and lighting at Institute.

Approved contract with Cole Lawrence to provide assistance for sound and lighting at Institute.

Approved the following personnel considerations:

— Retirement: Pam Farmer, sixth grade teacher at East Elementary School, effective Sept. 1.

— Resignations: Kelly Bowman, German/EL teacher at Cullman High School, effective July 25; Sara Howell, instructional assistant and Extended Day Program aide at West Elementary School, effective July 27 and Adam McGee, instructional assistant at West Elementary School, effective July 31.

— Leave of Absence: Ashley Roberts, fifth grade teacher at East Elementary School, requests Family and Medical Leave (FMLA) tentatively beginning Nov. 17 followed by a leave of absence through the end of the 2017-2018 school year.

— Transfers: Jennifer Shugarts, from Cullman Middle School nurse to Cullman High School nurse, beginning Aug. 1; Shan Goodlett,East Elementary School nurse to Cullman Middle School nurse, beginning Aug. 1; Rhonda Underwood, transfer from Cullman Middle School Special Education instructional assistant to Cullman High School Special Education instructional assistant, effective Aug. 3; Kim Overton, transfer from CNP worker at West Elementary School to CNP worker at Cullman City Primary School, effective Aug. 3 andTina Holmes, transfer from CNP worker at Cullman City Primary School to CNP worker at West Elementary School, effective Aug. 3.

The first budget hearing for the FY 2018 budget will be at 4:30 p.m, Tuesday, Aug. 15 in the Central Office Board Room, followed by the school board’s meeting at 5 p.m.
