4.5 magnitude earthquake rattles Oklahoma

PAWNEE, Okla. — A magnitude 4.5 earthquake in northern Oklahoma was felt by many residents of the state late Tuesday.

Initially reported to be magnitude 4.1, the 11:26 p.m. quake was later upgraded to magnitude 4.5.

It was centered seven miles east-southeast of Pawnee and 24 miles east-northeast of Stillwater, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake occurred in an area close to the epicenter of a September 3, 2016 quake, registered at a magnitude of 5.8, that was felt as far away as Nebraska.

Tuesday’s quake was six miles deep. There also was a magnitude 2.8 aftershock nearby reported at 3:57 a.m.

Prior to the quake, there were three other earthquakes recorded in the state.

A magnitude 3.2 temblor occurred at 7:10 p.m. nine miles west-northwest of El Reno and 20 miles west-northwest of Yukon. It was three miles deep.

At 7:21 p.m., a magnitude 3.3 earthquake was recorded nine miles west-northeast of El Reno and 19 miles west-northwest of Yukon. It was four miles deep.

A magnitude 3.0 quake at 7:48 p.m. was centered 12 miles east-northeast of Hennessey, Oklahoma and 19 miles southeast of Enid. It was two miles deep.

There have been 571 magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes, and 18 magnitude 4.0 or greater quakes recorded in the state since the beginning of the year, USGS records show. Last year, as of Nov. 2, 2015, there had been 721 magnitude 3.0 or greater quakes, and 21 magnitude 4.0 or greater earthquakes.
