ASWA RANKINGS: Holly Pond boys debut at No. 2 in 3A; Cold Springs, West Point girls start out 4th, 9th in respective classes

- West Point coach John Welborn and Cold Springs counterpart/big sister Tammy West chat before Tuesday’s crucial county clash. Both siblings’ squads are starting out ranked. Cold Springs came in at No. 4 in Class 2A, while West Point debuted at ninth up in 5A.
The area’s last two undefeated basketball teams were rewarded for their hot starts on Wednesday night.
Holly Pond’s boys debuted at No. 2 in Class 3A of the season’s first Alabama Sports Writers Association high school hoops rankings, while Cold Springs’ girls came in at fourth down in 2A.
The only team ahead of the Broncos, who’re 9-0 and averaging a robust 79 points a game, is reigning 3A state runner-up Midfield (6-1), which has reeled off six straight wins after a season-opening loss to Fairfield.
Every squad ahead of Cold Springs on the 2A girls side is also unbeaten. Samson (10-0) was tabbed No. 1, followed by Red Bay (5-0) and Geneva County (10-0).
The Lady Eagles improved to 8-0 Tuesday night with a hard-fought 72-59 win against West Point. The loss — their first — did little to hurt the Lady Warriors (10-1), who cracked the 5A top 10 at No. 9.
Fairview’s girls, at 8-2, were among those nominated in the same class.
