HOLLY POND — Cold Springs took the comeback route in Monday’s county girls rematch against Holly Pond, overcoming a double-digit first-half deficit to remain undefeated and escape Felton Easterwood Gymnasium with a 57-49 win.
The Class 2A No. 4 Lady Eagles trailed 34-25 at intermission before storming back and staving off the Broncos with a nearly perfect fourth-quarter performance from the free-throw line. Led by Camryn Crider’s 7-of-8 clip, Cold Springs was 11 of 12 at the charity stripe over the last eight minutes.
Emme Willoughby topped the Eagles (12-0) with 16 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Crider was next in line with 14 points, followed by Neely Ellison’s 12 from long range. Elizabeth Hill made a difference in practically every department, racking up nine points, 12 rebounds, seven blocks and five assists.
Molly Gambrill paced Holly Pond (4-11) with 15 points. Kolby Holcombe drained a quartet of 3-point attempts, Taylor Tankersley touted 10 points and Ruth Horton had seven.
% Addison 48, Corner 47: Kaylee Brummett kicked in a team-high 15 points, and the Lady Dawgs outscored the 5A Yellow Jackets 17-10 in the fourth quarter to turn back the 5A Yellow Jackets by the slimmest of margins.
Kendra Tyree came through with 12 points and nine rebounds, and Allie Townsend tacked on eight points. Maison Evans added five assists for Addison (8-1) and iced the game with a pair of free throws with 2 seconds left.
% Brewer 56, Fairview 53: Taylor Ann Yeager poured in 18 points, and Abby Schnittker contributed 10 points and seven rebounds in a tough loss for the Lady Aggies.
The tilt was tight from start to finish, with Fairview leading by one at the first two quarter breaks and the teams tied entering the final frame.
Abbi Taylor pulled down 10 rebounds for the Purple and Gold (12-4) and split 16 points with Daylia Dean.
% Danville 55, Good Hope 35: Sadie Abbott scored 14 points and Kate Kent had 10 in a lopsided defeat for the Lady Raiders.
Good Hope dropped to 5-7.
Varsity Boys
% Good Hope 57, Danville 41: Matt Cofer compiled a double-double, and Isaac McDonald and Kallen Sharpton each cracked double digits on offense, helping the Raiders reach the 10-win plateau.
Cofer waltzed away with 19 points and 10 rebounds for Good Hope (10-4). McDonald and Sharpton were good for 12 and 11 points, respectively.
“We had a terrible start, but I was proud of the resiliency my guys showed in the second half,” said Red and White coach Drew Adams.
% Holly Pond 79, Cold Springs 40: Bailey Smith, Jake Harris and Drew Jones all sported 14 points as the Broncos easily defended their home floor.
Matt Cahoon did his part in improving 3A No. 2 Holly Pond to 14-0 with 11 points.
Hunter McClendon led the Eagles (6-5) with 13 points. Jesse Lee and Blake Wood each had eight.
% James Clemens 51, Cullman 50: The Bearcats led by seven with a minute to go but couldn’t hold on in a 6A vs. 7A tourney matchup at the Buffalo Wild Wings Christmas Challenge inside Wallace State’s Tom Drake Coliseum.
Drew Morton and Trey Tucker both chipped in 12 points for Cullman (6-9). Dylan Finch added eight points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
% Brewer 67, Fairview 39: The Aggies fell into a 41-15 hole at halftime and could never climb out against a formidable Patriots squad.
Truman Boyd and Luke Yarbrough netted 10 and nine points for Fairview, which fell to 7-8. Sam Elrod and Bryson Fletcher chipped in six points apiece.
