PREP FOOTBALL: West Point’s Hernandez named All-Region Defensive MVP

Alex Hernandez was named the Defensive MVP for Class 5A, Region 6, highlighting a group of West Point and Fairview All-Region selections following their release earlier this week.
Hernandez spearheaded a fiery Maroon and White defense with 145 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, eight pass breakups, one sack, one pick, and one forced fumble en route to helping his team collect six wins and its third consecutive playoff berth.
The senior linebacker was accompanied by fellow teammates Cameron Moore (RB), Brandon Farley (WR), Deven Jenkins (OL), Austin Smith (LB) and Noah Allison (P) on the coaches’ squad, while Deakon Hembree (OL), Kaleb Faulkner (DL), Austin Dubberly (LB) and Dalton Freeman (DB) each garnered honorable mentions for the Warriors.
Fairview’s Andrew Morris (OL), Logan Brooks (RB), Sambo Woods (WR) and Ragan Ashley (DB) all made the cut for the Aggies, who earned five victories in 2016. The Purple and Gold’s honorable mentions were Tyler Pendergrass (OL), Ivan Medina (DL), Garrett Dunn (WR), Jaxxon Swann (K), Brady Brooks (DL), Ethan Holland (DB) and Scoot Bennett (DB).
Mortimer Jordan running back Spencer Brown was selected as the All-Region MVP, while Hayden’s Leonard Johnson (offense) and Mortimer Jordan’s Dusty Goode (coach) rounded out the region’s other top winners.
