Milo’s Hamburgers is coming to Cullman’s Marktplatz Shopping Center.

The Birmingham-based fast-food chain will open up shop next door to Cici’s Pizza with construction set to kick off in September, said Jason Grimmett with Drinkard Development which owns the shopping center. The new businesses put the commercial development, located off Cherokee Avenue, at 100 percent occupancy, he said.

“Everyone at Drinkard Development has worked hard to attract tenants and new business to our growing community and are very excited about both of these. We’re looking forward to the future,” he said.

The nearest Milo’s Hamburgers is in Gardendale on Fieldstown Road. The restaurant is famous for its “love ‘em or hate ‘em” burgers and sweet tea. The chain was started by Milo Carlton, a mess cook in the U.S. Army, in 1946.

“Milo’s plans to put up six new locations across the state over the next 18 months,” Grimmett said. “They’ll hire 20 people or so. It’s a nice concept with a double drive-thru.”

Cullman was briefly home to a Milo’s Hamburgers about 25 years ago, he said. But at the time, it was hard for the Birmingham-based chain to compete with the likes of McDonald’s and Burger King.

Yogurt Street, a small family-owned chain with three locations including one in Jasper on U.S. 78 East, just opened at the shopping center. The shop plans to employ 6 to 8 people.

“Although yogurt may not be new to Cullman, their brand and their unique approach certainly is,” Grimmett said.

“The difference in what they offer is that their yogurt is handmade every morning. Anywhere else you go, especially national and regional yogurt shops, will be pre-packaged. When you taste it, you quickly see the difference. They offer fresh fruit every day. Nothing is held over to the next day with dozens of toppings. All yogurt is low-fat. Some is gluten-free, and they even offer some sugar-free yogurt for diabetics.”

Grimmett said the eatery’s “Bubble Tea” is a must-try product, and the shop will also feature a kids’ corner for youngsters to gobble up their chilled treats.

“The owners have also expressed their interest in being involved locally and helping with the schools,” he said.
