HANCEVILLE — For a few hours last month, Kenneth Nail thought he had won a third term as Hanceville mayor.

But then former mayor Bobby Brown qualified to run against him, clearing his paperwork with the state. On Tuesday night, Nail tasted victory again, and this time it’s going to last.

Nail won a third consecutive term in a landslide with 433 votes to Brown’s 144.

“I’m just really happy. I’m tired, but I’m happy,” Nail said. “I think we have a council that is going to allow us to move forward, and I’m really grateful that the people of Hanceville have placed their trust in me and in the council they’ve elected. I am humbled.”

While the figurehead of Cullman County’s second largest city remains the same, the election shook up the composition of the city council. Incumbents Doug Batemon and Greg Baker lost their reelection bids to newcomers Sharon Porter and Justin Pruett respectively.

“I think you’re gonna see some good things happening in Hanceville,” Nail said. “It says a lot about the people of this town that they considered all the candidates and they voted their conscience. If you don’t like Kenneth Nail, that’s fine; don’t vote for Kenneth Nail. But make your voice heard. I think people made their voice heard tonight.”

Nail has pushed for revitalized the city’s historic downtown, staking his own money on the C Street Cafe, along with finding funds to pave more streets and outfit police and firefighters with new equipment and vehicles.

Nail will be sworn into office in November along with the rest of the council.
