Gardendale Council honors ‘hero’ officer, presents checks

The Gardendale Council meeting started with the presentation of two checks and an award.

First Police Chief Mike Walker presented Officer Elijah Brigham with an award and medal from the American Police Hall of Fame for his work in apprehending a suspect attempting to burglarize the Wells Fargo bank in Gardendale.

Brigham thwarted the burglary and apprehended the suspect, who later admitted that he had taken millions of dollars from banks.

The city also presented a check for $7,005.22 to Cornerstone Ranch as the proceeds for the city’s annual charity softball tournament.

Then the Youth Football Association presented a check to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama for $18,000 from their annual charity bowl.

In other business, the council:

•approved rezoning 960 Mt. Olive Road to Institutional 2 from PUD.

•approved a new fire hydrant for Highway 31.

•approved the renewal of a line of credit with Regions Bank.

•approved a parade permit for the 2016 Christmas parade to be held on Dec. 1.

•set a city cleanup day for Oct. 8.

•approved the surplus of items no longer needed by the city, including PCs, cell phones, draperies and other items. Some will be auctioned off online and others will be donated to local nonprofits.

•approved agreements with the county board of education to use the gyms at Snow Rogers and Bragg Middle schools for park and recreation needs.
