Buzzer-beater lifts Erwin over Blue Devils

Anthony Bowie’s basket with seconds to play gave visiting Erwin a 39-37 win over Mortimer Jordan in Tuesday’s boys basketball action.

The Eagles grabbed the rebound after the Blue Devils missed the front end of a one-and-bonus free throw opportunity, then drove the length of the floor for Bowie’s score at the buzzer. Jordan had held a four-point lead with a minute left to play.

“If you had a checklist of everything to do to blow a four-point lead in the last minute, we did it,” Devils coach Daniel Foy said. “We didn’t box out, they got put-backs. Our point guard falls down, they get the ball and score to tie the game. We miss a one-and-one, they get the rebound and (Bowie) hits it at the buzzer.”

Bowie led the Eagles with 14 points.

Caesar Bell scored a game-high 17 points for Jordan. Desmond Brown added 10 points.

“I told the team after the game that this was one of the most disappointing losses in my 18 years of coaching, because it would have been the biggest win in those 18 years, and we let it slip away,” Foy said.
