LOCAL SPORTS: Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame inducts 17th class

The Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame’s 17th class was officially installed Saturday night during a heavily attended banquet at the Civic Center. Chairman Jackie Satterfield once again provided the laughs to a room littered with athletes and coaches — both past and present — as one of the area’s most time-honored groups ushered in another deserving selection of the county’s best.

The 2016 class consisted of Del Brock, Ken Gunter and Todd Hermetz (Cullman); Cindy Barksdale Mallard and Bobby Meyer (Hanceville); Charlie Rogers (Cold Springs); Greg Boatright (Fairview); Dillard Quick Jr. (Good Hope); Bill Oliver (Holly Pond); Mike Grantham (Vinemont); Roy Johnson (West Point); and Jayne Clem (At Large).

Before this year’s inductees were honored, 11 student-athletes were awarded college scholarships for their wonderful work both in and out of the classroom.

The senior recipients were as follows:

% Cullman County Sports Hall of Fame Scholarship: Elli Dixon, Cullman; Tanner Rusk, West Point

% Charlotte Cummings Memorial Scholarship: Valarie C. Yarbrough, Fairview

% Jimmy Dale Burgess Scholarship: Madeline McNutt, Fairview

% James and Gussie Shabel Memorial Scholarship: Heather Middleton, Good Hope

% Coach Lane and Nancy Horton Scholarship: Taylor Hollingsworth, Hanceville

% Dane Estes Memorial Scholarship: Taylor Oslin, Holly Pond

% Coach Charlie Richard Memorial Scholarship: Alli Messick, St. Bernard

% Michael Stewart Memorial Scholarship: Hunter Green, Vinemont
