- Neighbors gather as police investigate an accident on David Street in Dale Borough that sent a young child to the hospital on Friday, April 1, 2016. The child died at the hospital, the Cambria County coroner said.
A 3-year-old boy was killed Friday afternoon in a vehicle-pedestrian crash in Dale Borough, authorities said.
A westbound Saturn sedan stuck the child in the 200 block of David Street at 2:26 p.m.
Cambria County Coroner Jeffrey Lees said the boy was visiting his great-grandparents and was playing in a fenced-in yard.
“Somehow the fence became opened and the child darted across the roadway and was struck by the car,” Lees said.
Seventh Ward EMS took the child to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown.
“The child died at 4:36 p.m. in the emergency department,” Lees said.
Lees would not identify the child, but said he will release more information on Saturday. The boy was from the Johnstown area, Lees said.
An autopsy is scheduled Saturday morning.
“I’ll give the family a little time to get everybody notified,” he said. “It’s a rather large family.”
State police are investigating and reported late Friday the car was operated by Zachary James Smith, 27, of Johnstown.
An accident reconstruction team was at the scene Friday.
The driver was given a field sobriety test before a state trooper led him away in handcuffs.
“You’re technically in custody right now,” the trooper was heard telling Smith.
Police roped off a portion of David Street as they interviewed witnesses, including the driver – who was in tears.
A pool of blood, a child’s toy and a pair of children’s sneakers lay near the vehicle.
State police from the Ebensburg barracks and Stonycreek Township police responded to the crash.
Firefighters from Dale Borough and Oakland also responded.
