Jefferson County Schools does away with requirement for mesh backpacks

If your child attends school in the Jefferson County system, they will no longer be required to use a mesh backpack.
Such backpacks were required in order to prevent students from concealing weapons or other illicit items. However, JefCoEd spokeswoman Nez Calhoun said the need for backpacks that can be seen into from outside was rendered moot for three reasons:
- The requirement was ineffective, because illicit items can be hidden in mesh backpacks almost as easily as in those you can’t see through
- Students use all sorts of bags like musical instrument cases, gym bags, lunch boxes and the like where students can conceal items
- Illicit items can be carried and concealed in clothing
Calhoun said the original rule was put into effect just after the Columbine shootings in 1999. The change takes effect for the coming school year.
