The funeral for Wyatt Lee Heard, who was a student at Wallace State Community College, was Tuesday. Heard was killed when his 1965 Chevrolet Biscayne, traveling south on Convent Road collided with a 2002 Chevrolet pickup traveling north, police said.

The wreck happened between the entrance of the Cullman County Animal Shelter and the HOPE (Horses Offering People Encouragement) facility.

Robert Baylor Bean, 19, of Cullman was the driver of the truck, said Cullman police Sgt. Mick Harbison. Police said both men were wearing seatbelts.

“It appears the truck driven by Robert Bean crossed the center line and struck the car driven by Wyatt Heard nearly head on,” Harbison said.

Police believe the wet road conditions Saturday evening may have been a factor in the wreck. Bean was taken to Cullman Regional Medical Center Saturday to have a blood sample drawn for toxicology screening, which is routine for traffic fatality investigations.

Harbison said he did not know when the results would be back. The Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville will perform the toxicology testing.
